A player’s career

He played college football at Oregon, San Mateo, and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, California, where he played on both offensive and defensive teams, stood out as an offensive player. He also played as a catcher on the Cal Poly baseball team. Madden was selected in the 21st round (244th overall pick) by the Philadelphia Eagles National Football League team in 1958. But a knee injury inflicted on the training ground a year later ended his competitive career in his fight.

A year after John Rauch resigned as Raiders coach to join the Buffalo Bills, Madden was named head coach of the Raiders on February 4, 1969, becoming (later) head coach of the Raiders. Youngest professional soccer coach at 32.

Hired as Head Coach of the Raiders by Al Davis at the age of 32, Madden coached Silver and Black for 10 seasons and compiled a respectable 103-32-7 regular-season record. From 1969-78, the Raiders posted winning records each season, winning seven division titles and qualifying for the playoffs eight times.
However, his team faced constant disappointment in the post-season period, especially against Pittsburgh. Five defeats in AFC games in seven years have left the Raiders with the same image as Dallas before, that they are incapable of “winning the big game.” Despite a 12-1-1 record in 1969, they lost 17-7 to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFL championship game.
Three years later, the last-minute win over the Steelers became part of professional football mythology with Franco Harris’ “Immaculate Reception” delivering a 13-7 victory for Pittsburgh. Then in 1974, after defeating the defending Super Bowl champion Miami twice in a dramatic match, the Raiders again lost to the Steelers in the AFC championship match.

In 1976, Madden coached the Raiders to a 13-1 record and 32-14 victory over the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl XI, marking the Professional Football franchise’s first World Championship.
As professional football grew in popularity and influence, Madden and the Silver and Black teams played a key role in several AFL and NFL semi-final moments, including “Sea of Hands,” ” Immaculate Reception,” “Holy Roller” and “Ghost to Post,” among others.
